A visit to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is meant to feel peaceful, wild, and unforgettable. These simple tips and guidelines help you enjoy your time here while protecting the bison, elk, and prairie we all love.

Please keep these core safety rules in mind throughout your visit.

No drones – they disturb wildlife and can create unsafe situations.
No smoking or vaping on refuge grounds due to fire risk.
No open flames or campfires anywhere on the property.
Stay inside vehicles or trams in wildlife areas unless instructed otherwise by staff.
Report any unsafe behavior or hazards to refuge staff immediately.

Protect the Refuge

Prohibited Activities

To protect the land, animals, and other guests, the following are not allowed:

Hunting, harassing, or chasing wildlife.
Collecting antlers, plants, rocks, or other natural materials.
Pets on refuge grounds (service animals are permitted).
Off-road driving or leaving marked roads and trails.
Loud music, disruptive behavior, alcohol, or illegal substances.

Stay on marked roads and trails only.
Do not exit your vehicle in wildlife zones unless directed by staff.
Park only in designated parking areas and avoid blocking gates or access roads.

Photography is encouraged — please do not block paths, tram routes, or wildlife crossings.
Flash photography is discouraged around animals to reduce stress.
Tram tours are wheelchair-accessible with advance notice; please contact us before your visit.
