A Wild Kansas Adventure — Up Close & Unforgettable

Experience the native prairie, American bison, and elk at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. Whether you’re taking a tram tour or visiting for an event, this guide helps you know what to expect and how to get ready.

Arrival & Check-In

When you arrive, follow the signs to the Visitor Center. This is your hub for check-in, restrooms, and a quick look around before you head out on the prairie.

  • Give your name at the desk if you pre-purchased tickets online.
  • Same-day tickets may be available, but tram tours often fill up.
  • Restrooms and basic refreshments are available in the Visitor Center.

Your Tram Tour Experience

After check-in, you’ll board the tram with your guide and fellow guests for a slow, scenic ride through the refuge.

  • Expect close views of American bison, elk, and native prairie plants.
  • Guides share history, wildlife facts, and stories that bring the prairie to life.
  • Tours usually last 45–60 minutes, depending on weather and where the animals are grazing.

Wildlife Photography & Viewing

Maxwell is a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. The tram offers excellent angles for photos without disturbing the animals.

  • Bring cameras, smartphones, or binoculars for close-up views.
  • Expect natural, unscripted wildlife encounters.
  • Stay seated on the tram while taking photos.

Family-Friendly

Perfect for kids, grandparents & everyone in between

Kids love seeing bison and elk up close, and the pace of the tram ride is relaxed enough for all ages.

  • Children should stay seated on the tram for safety.
  • Strollers are welcome in the Visitor Center (not on the tram).
