Plan your visit to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and make sure you’ve got your spot on the tram before you head out to the prairie. This page walks you through how to reserve, what ticket types are available, and what to expect when you arrive.

Complete your reservation using our online booking system. Booking at least 3 days in advance helps us schedule guides and guarantee seating for your group.

Choose the option that matches your visit—public tours, private groups, or special events.

Public Tram Tours

45–60 minute guided tram ride through 2,800 acres of native Kansas prairie.
  • See our bison herd year-round; elk are typically most visible late fall through early spring.
  • Live narration from guides about wildlife, plants, and the history of Maxwell.
  • Offered on select days and times listed on the Tour Calendar.

Private Group Tours

Ideal for schools, churches, scouts, clubs, tour buses, and family reunions.
  • Flexible dates and times by reservation.
  • Group-friendly pricing.
  • Custom length and focus (wildlife, history, photography, etc.).

Seasonal & Special Event Tours

Limited-date experiences like Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Prairie, Mountain Man Fall Rendezvous, and other themed events.
  • Unique themes and holiday experiences.
  • Limited seating; early reservations recommended.

When Tours Run & How to Reserve

Experience Maxwell Wildlife Refuge on a guided tram tour through the Kansas prairie.

Tour Days: Public tram tours run every Tuesday and Saturday.

Tour Times:

  • 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
  • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM (added only if the first tour fills)

Check-in: Please arrive 15–20 minutes early to check in and board the tram.

Reservation Info: Advance reservations are recommended. A 3-day notice helps ensure guide availability.

Public Tram Tour Pricing

  • Adults (12 & up): $15.00

  • Children (ages 4–11): $7.50

  • Children age 3 & under: Free

 

Payment & Confirmation

Online reservations are paid by credit or debit card during booking, while phone or email reservations may require payment upon arrival. You’ll receive a confirmation with your tour date, time, and instructions.

Arrival & Check-In

Please arrive 15–20 minutes before your tram time and check in at the Tour Center. Restrooms and displays are available, and late arrivals cannot board once the tram has departed.

Cancellation & Weather Policy

Cancellations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Severe weather may cause delays or rescheduling, and refunds follow the policy provided during booking.

Accessibility & Special Needs

The Tour Center is ADA compliant, and the tram supports most mobility needs. Please inform us during booking if anyone requires wheelchair, walker, or other assistance.

Ticket & Reservation FAQs

Do I need a reservation, or can I just show up?
Reservations are strongly recommended. Some dates do sell out, and many tours are “by reservation only.”
For regular public tram tours, booking 3 days ahead is ideal. For special events and group tours, book as early as you can.
Yes! Families are welcome. Check specific tour listings for age guidelines, lap-sitting rules, and child pricing.
Tours run in a wide range of Kansas weather, but storms, ice, or dangerous conditions may require changes. Check your email, our social media, or call the Tour Center if you’re unsure.
You can see portions of the refuge from designated road areas, but the tram tour is the best way to safely see bison and elk up close and learn from our guides.
