Located along the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway, just over an hour from Wichita and northeast of McPherson.

Times can vary by season and special events. Always check your ticket confirmation or call ahead before driving out.
Public Tram Tours
Public tram tours are offered on scheduled dates, most often morning tours between 9:00 AM and Noon.
- Tour length is typically 45–60 minutes out on the prairie.
- Advance reservations are strongly recommended.
- Check the online ticket calendar for exact dates and times.
Private & Group Tours
Private trams, school groups, 4-H, scouts, churches, and other organizations can book tours by reservation outside regular public tour times.
- Flexible schedule based on staff and tram availability.
- Ideal for classrooms, field trips, and group outings.

Visitor Center & Gift Shop
The visitor center and gift shop are generally open during scheduled tram tours and most special events.
- Educational displays on bison, elk, and the prairie ecosystem.
- Local history of the refuge and Maxwell family.
- Restrooms and refuge merchandise available.
Self-Guided Wildlife Viewing
A public access road runs through the refuge to McPherson State Fishing Lake for self-guided viewing from your vehicle.
- Road is generally open daily unless closed for weather or maintenance.
- Stay in your vehicle when inside the bison/elk enclosure.
- Use designated pull-off areas only; do not block the road.
Driving Directions
Roads are paved to Canton and then mostly gravel into the refuge. Drive slowly on loose rock and watch for wildlife.
From Canton, KS
- Travel north on 27th Avenue / K-86 for 6 miles.
- Turn west (left) onto Pueblo Road.
- Continue approximately 1¼ miles to the refuge entrance and visitor center.
From Wichita, KS
- Take I-135 North toward Newton / McPherson.
- Exit toward McPherson or Moundridge, then follow local routes east toward Canton.
- From Canton, follow the directions above.
From McPherson, KS
- Travel south or east toward Canton following local highways.
- From Canton, follow the 27th Avenue / Pueblo Road directions into the refuge.
Parking, Arrival & Weather Tips
- Free parking is available near the visitor center and tram loading area.
- Plan to arrive 15–20 minutes early to check in, use restrooms, and board on time.
- Dress in layers—prairie weather can change quickly, especially with wind.
- Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and plenty of drinking water.
- For safety, always follow your guide’s instructions around bison and elk.
- In case of severe weather, staff may delay or reschedule tours for your safety.
